The students were so excited for their early Sunday morning workshop we arrived before they even opened the shop! Luis was our guide through the origins and history of the classic Catalonian shoe, the espadrille! The class expanded their knowledge on the journey of the humble beginnings of the shoe from that of necessity for the working class – one size fits most, with an intricate threading system to tighten the shoe around the wearers foot. Then we discovered a famous Catalunya local, Salvador Dali embraced the classic working class shoe into his daily style, introducing it to his friend Coco Chanel who elevated it to the level of high fashion! Each student had the opportunity to build their own pair of unique espadrilles adding ribbons by hand using the Catalan technique!

Steph’s Spanish seminar exploring underground Barcelona at the Museo de Historia de Barcelona viewing ancient ruins and learning about the history of Catalonia. At the Museo de Historia de Barcelona, visitors can explore fascinating exhibits showcasing the city’s rich past, from ancient Roman ruins and medieval architecture to modern-day cultural heritage.

Emily’s Seminar Group ventured off for a Sunday brunch together at GiGi Von Tapas near the Sagrada Familia. After they wandered over to the Gothic Quarter to enjoy free time with other seminar groups for a couple of hours.
